About Ran Opal

Maki-e On Boulder Opals 欄~Ran~

~ The Innovative Collaboration of Japanese Traditional Art and Australian
  Natural gemstone~

It’s sophisticated but gorgeous!! We first attempted lacquer on ironstone parts, so that any boulder opals could be colorful. Then, we adventurously processedran_opal01 it on other area, so that Opal’s color patterns would be seen as different pictures….Because it’s the genuine Opal, we use only gold, platinum, shells and natural adhesive urushi. With the characteristic of urushi and special techniques, the lovely pictures not only stay forever but become more colorful and lustrous as time goes by.

~ lacquer with gold powder ~
Different from gold leaf (which is made by beating gold), pure gold powder is much more stable; the use of gold in powder-finishing is 3 to 4 times more than that of leaf-finishing. By applying urushi (resin) on it, the stability of the paints becomes more long-life. As long as it’s used normally, the gold paint will be permanent. Lacquer works using gold powder reserved at the historical museum stay as they were.
